Year 4 to 6 students are participating in the Sports Bay of Plenty Go 4 It swimming programme this term. Students are attending the Greerton Aquatics Centre to be taught by one of three professional swimming instructors. The students had to swim 200m as part of an initial assessment and have been learning about the different swimming strokes as well as water safety.

Today the students learnt how to pin drop into deep water whilst wearing a life jacket, how to form a train and huddle together for water survival.

This week the students will be looking at helpfulness. Helpfulness is being of service to others, doing thoughtful things that make a difference in their lives. Offer your help without waiting to be asked. Ask for help when you need it. When we help each other, we get more done. We make our lives easier.

Kaimai School has established a Head Student programme for 2012. Year eight students who wished to be elected as head student were required to fill out an application form which asked them why they would like to be a head student, what virtues do they consistently demonstrate, what makes them a good role model for others, as well as listing achievements (both curricular and extra curricular). The history of the student’s diligence in the classroom, positive attitude and leadership qualities are all taken into account.

“The quality of the students that applied for head student was very high,” said principal, Dane Robertson. “We are very fortunate to have senior students who are caring, responsible and dedicated young people. It made the job of selecting just two very hard indeed.”

The two students that were named head students are Maddie Ormsby and Rebekah McCafferty. Both girls started their schooling at Kaimai School and have grown to be great role models with strong leadership skills. “I am looking forward to participating in the peer mediation programme,” said Rebekah, “It will be fun working with other students from the different classes.” Maddie said that she still feels a little nervous about speaking in front of lots of people but feels that she will be able to do it.

“I felt shocked when my name was called out in assembly because I didn’t think I was going to be chosen,” said Maddie. “When my name was called out as one of the head students, I felt really proud because a lot of people had applied to be head student,” added Rebekah.

When asked what skills do they bring to the job of head students, both Maddie and Rebekah were modest in their abilities.

“I try to do my best in everything I do, this is a good virtue to have and I hope other students learn from it,” said Rebekah. Maddie added, “One of the strengths I have that will be useful as head student is passion. Passion for learning, for giving things a go and for helping make Kaimai School a great place”
