Four Finalists In The MADE Awards

Last year Kaimai School had one finalist in the New Zealand Movies and Digital Excellence Awards (MADE Awards). This was a short film entitled “Midnight Robbers.” This film won the Year 4 to 6 category. This year Kaimai School has four entries in the MADE Awards finals.
The first entry through is the Year 4-6 short film by Shyanne Erueti, Tessa Olsson and Tegan Cutforth called “Apple Surprise.” This short film focuses on an apple that makes its way to join the children in the classroom, only to come to an unexpected ending.
Students from Room 3 had to write, film, direct, act and edit their own film. The film had to entertain the viewer as well as create an emotional response.
“The trickiest part of filming for us was getting the apple to roll in the right direction,” said Tessa. “It was also hard for me to try and stay still when filming using the green screen.”
“I am so pleased that our film was good enough to make the finals,” said Tegan. “Especially when we had lost a lot of our edited work and had to start over again!”
“I am looking forward to seeing the audiences’ reaction when we win!” added a hopeful Shyanne.

Kaimai School has also, for the first time, achieved finalists in the Year 7 to 8 Digital Manipulation category. Students are required to take a photo and manupulae it using a programme such as Photoshop. The students from Room 1 had a focus around ‘Global Connections.’
“What is really exciting is that of the six finalists, three are from our classroom,” said Room one teacher, Sonjae Henderson.
Darren Skudder, Reeid Harmsworth and Bianca Collins will all be crossing their fingers that their name is called out on the night.
“I had seen a picture with a man holding a book and I thought it would look good if I made it look like a whole lot of stuff was flying out of the book,” said Darren. “I am really happy with the way my picture turned out.”
“I was surprised that I made it through. This was the first time my work has made it through to a final,” said Reeid.
The finals night will be held at Bay Court on Thursday the 10th of November. The MC for the night will be Shortland Street actress, Kimberley Crossman, with the Supreme Award being announced by Weta Digital’s Sir Richard Taylor.

Calf Club Info

Another term has come to an end. For our students it has been a long one, but they have done well and have worked solidly throughout. Please be aware that term four will start on Tuesday 25th October due to Monday being Labour Day.

The first week back will see your child preparing for Calf Club. By now you should have all received a Calf Club information booklet explaining the indoor and outdoor exhibits. If you have not received a booklet, or if it has been misplaced, please just logon to our website at http://www.kaimai.school.nz/blog/2011/08/03/calf-club-2010/.

The teachers will be setting Friday aside for the students to put all their indoor exhibits together. Please feel free to join in on the Friday to help in the classroom should you wish. If you have access to flowers, and are happy to share them in your child’s classroom, then please feel free to bring these in on the Friday too.

We ask that each child bring in at least one ‘Granny Jane Jar’ by Friday. A “Granny Jane Jar’ is a (clean) jar that has approximately $2 to $4 worth of ‘stuff’ in it, which we sell for $2 each. The ‘stuff’ is usually things like lollies or chocolate, but you may chose to put in stickers, erasers, pencils, pens, small toys, or the like. These jars are very popular with the children (and big children too) on Calf Club Day and we would like every child who wants to purchase a ‘Granny Jane Jar’ the opportunity to buy one.

Please remember that the jars are to be sold for two dollars so be careful to make sure that the child will get value for money but please do not feel like the jars have to be filled to the brim, remember it is only a $2 to $4 value. Should you require jars we have plenty at the school. We would also appreciate it if you could supply some baking for the cake stall as well as a grocery item for our raffle too. The grocery item can be dropped off anytime during the week and the baking is best bought to school on the Saturday morning.

Calf Club is run by the PTA, a group of hard working parents who supply many opportunities for your child. Money raised in the past has gone towards transportation to events, productions at Bay Court, swimming pool items, sports gear, Kapa Haka uniforms, interactive whiteboards and many more items. Without the PTA a lot of resources would not be available for your child. Please support the PTA by suppling a little bit of baking, a grocery item and some Granny Jane Jars, as well as attending the Calf Club Day (which is great fun). Should you like to get involved with the PTA, please contact the school office.

I hope our students have a great break and we will see you all back in term four.

Where to…?

If we could create a world for our children and their children’s children, where the education system was sufficiently flexible, nimble, relevant, and prepared all students for a relatively unknown future, despite the rapid change that will undoubtedly occur, what would it look like? What would school look like, how would a school day play out?

These are questions that the Board of Trustees and I are examining at the moment. Our job over the next three months is to lay out a strategic plan for the next three to five years. This plan is painted with broad strokes, the finer details are sorted out annually.

At present we are looking at planning a strategic plan to help prepare our students for their future lives by having a solid grounding in Science and Technology (along with the ‘three R’s). Science is about looking at how the world works, why it works and attempts to understand it. It is looking at problems (and yet to be problems) and curiosities and attempting to understand and solve them.

We are heading (albeit roughly at the moment) in the direction of a school that educates the whole child, using Inquiry learning across the Arts, Sciences and Health and PE curriculum to empower students to be true 21st Century learners.  We would like your opinions on what you would like to see from Kaimai School over the next three to five years. Can we integrate Maori Tikanga and Te Reo more effectively? When your child leaves Kaimai School, what do you want them to have, be able to do? What experiences do you think our students should have whilst at Kaimai?  Your thoughts can help shape the direction of Kaimai School over the next three to five years, just add your comments by clicking on the comment box below.

Sevens Round Up

Our year 5 and 6 students performed to their best at this year’s Sevens Tournament.  It was great to see Ben and Brad score a try in the rugby, Hope and Tessa defend against such tall shooters in netball and Leon making some brilliant saves in goal whilst playing football.  What was really great to see were students like Sean, Joseph and Baillie playing their first game of football.  Although our students were playing against some of the largest primary schools in the WBOP they still gave it their all and never gave in.
A special congratulations to Tegan Cutford, our only hockey player, who teamed up with the year 6 Pyes Pa team.  Tegan and the Pyes Pa team won the Year 6 West Cluster tournament.  Tegan helped the team to first place, which were played on the hockey turf at Tauranga Boys College, by slotting in two goals.  Tegan  will now be off to the WBOP 7′s Championships on Wednesday the 28th September.  Best of luck Tegan!!!!

Super Orators!!

Today saw the finals of our speech competition.  What was very clear from the get go was that the standard was very high.  Year 2 student Cody McKee was the first to present her speech.  Cody did extremely well having only been at school for 1 year and a half years!!  The speech finals were a new experience for all the year 2 and 3 students,  but they all presented as if they had been doing it for years.  The judges who had the difficult task of declaring a winner were Board of Trustees rep Kim Jordan and Principal Dane Robertson.  The competition was tight, especially in years 3, 6 and 8  where the judges had to combine scores to determine the winner.

Congratulations to all the finalists, they did a fantastic job and can be very proud of their efforts.

Year 2:  1st Amy Campbell,   2nd Cody McKee,   3rd Sam McLean
Year 3:  1st Wilko Clark,   2nd Jack Robertson,   3rd Paige Aulding
Year 4:  1st Jessica Coster,   2nd Dannielle Borman,   3rd Jovanna Pillay
Year 5:  1st Cassidy Ormsby,   2nd Baillie Harmsworth
Year 6:  1st Tessa Olsson,   2nd Maggie McCafferty
Year 7:  1st Summer Harris,   2nd Dylan Gibb
Year 8:  1st Tim Guy,   2nd Olivia Pogan

Sweet, sweet, music.

Last week some talented year 4 to 8 students sung at the annual Tauranga Schools Choral Festival. Our school choir sung, alongside other schools, hits from the Motown label.  Although the Kaimai School Choir had the smallest amount of members they made up for this with sheer quality.  The choir sung three part harmonies (the only school to do so on the night) and were the pride of Kaimai.

FIRST GOLD FOR KAIMAI AT NZ AIMS

On Sunday 28th of August Year 7 student, Rebekah McCafferty won the NZ AIMS Cross Country Championships.  The NZ AIMS is for all year 7 and 8 students throughout New Zealand.  Over 140 schools attend the games with over 4,500 competitors.

Rebekah was one of the favourites to take out the title, as she had dominated the cross country circuit all season.  She looked a little nervous as she lined up for the start with a crowd of 2,000 spectators cheering on the runners.  Although Rebekah is the WBOP, BOP and North Island champion there were also a number of highly regarded runners also competing on the day.  After the start of the race a small leading bunch broke away from the other 80 runners and at about one third through the race three runners had set the pace that was too fast for the rest of the field.

Rebekah ran a strong and calculated race.  Leading from the start, dictating the pace but clearly leaving enough in reserve for the final push.  The final kilometre of the race saw Rebekah and her main rival, Zia MacDermid from Monrad Intermidate, fighting it out for the top placing.  Rebekah looked calm and relaxed as she came round the final bend and sprinted the last 40m, 9 seconds ahead of Zia.

We all at Kaimai School congratulate Rebekah for this outstanding achievement as well as Rebekah’s mum and dad who have helped coach her to this gold medal winning performance.  You can read the BOP Times article, which includes an interview with Rebekah, by clicking here.
