Waimarino – Next Friday 17th February
Welcome to 2012! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and found some time to enjoy the few summer days that we had.
On the Friday the 17th of February we will be spending the day at Waimarino Adventure Park. As most of you would be aware Waimarino Adventure Park is located on the banks of the Wairoa River, Bethlehem Tauranga. They provide a trained instructor to facilitate our full day programme. Students will have the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of activities and get to experience the latest addition to park – the Blob! The activities encourage students to develop life skills, trust, cooperation, confidence and water safety.
To enable us to attend we need a minimum of 5 parents that are willing to actively supervise by getting into the kayaks and joining us on the water. We will also require transport to and from the park.
The cost of the programme is $25 per student (adult helpers – free). We will leave school at 9am and return by 2.50pm (Bus students WILL be back in time to catch the bus).
You will need:
Togs and towel
Sunhat
Sunscreen
Packed lunch – including plenty of water to drink and morning tea.
Wetsuit (if you have one)
Jersey or some warm clothing
Suitable footwear (jandals are ok)
Students are not to bring any money, cellphones, ipods or the like.
Please return the forms given out last Friday along with payment of the $25 ASAP. I hope that you are able to join us and look forward to spending a fun day out with the kids!

A Sneak Peek at Room 4 2012….
Hi all…
Welcome to Room 4! At Kaimai School each student in Room 1 is given the use of a MacBook Laptop. As much of our work is completed using the laptops your child will not require as many exercise books. The following is a list of the stationery and tools of the trade required.
Please ensure that all items are clearly named. Please do not put subject names on any books as we will label them together on the first day of term.
2 HB pencils
2 blue ballpoint pen
2 red ballpoint pen
1 packet of colouring pencils
1 packet of felt tip pens (Faber Castle last the best)
1 30 cm ruler
1 eraser
1 pencil sharpener
2 gluesticks
1 compass
1 pair of scissors
1 refill – A4 200 Leaves 7mm ruled
1 40 leaf clear file
1 1E8 Mathematics Book
2 1B8 Exercise Books
1 Clever Kiwi Activity Book or A3 blank white paper scrapbook/project book (Year 8’s – we will use last years one so you will not need a new one)
1 1GB (minimum) Memory Stick/USB Flash Drive
1 set of computer headphones (ipod/MP3 headphones are fine)
Please come ready with this equipment on the first day of school in 2011, so that we can make an immediate start.
EOTC in 2012
EOTC (Education Outside of the Classroom) in 2012 will include a day trip to Waimarino Adventure Park early in Term 1, a camp late in Term 3 and possibly a day trip to Baywave somewhere along the way.
Waimarino has already been booked – it is on Friday 17th of February 2012 and will cost $25. I will send home a detailed notice in Week 1 next year but you may like to put the date in your diary.
If all bookings go to plan it is most likely that our camp will be a 4 day experience at Tongariro National Park. Based on a previous camp there I would estimate the cost to be around $300 for a full four day programme (this includes all activities, transport and food.) As this is a very expensive exercise we will be fund-raising in Terms 2 and 3 to offset the cost.
Our website is the hub of our classroom learning and will have all details about what’s happening in Room 1 throughout the year (including a copy of this letter should you misplace it in the Christmas rush), so please visit regularly – www.kaimai.school.nz and click on Room 4.
Next year will be an action packed and exciting year and I am looking forward to working with your children.
Take care….
Mrs Sonjae Henderson

Camp, Calf Club & the MADE Awards!!
Wow! What a start to the term!! We’ve had so much happening in our class. Week 1 was an action-packed week at Ngamuwahine Outdoor Education Centre. Followed by calf club at the end of Week 1, then last week we had three finalists, Reeid, Bianca and Darren, in the the Media and Digital Excellence (MADE) Awards and received second and third placings in the Manipulated Image section.
Camp was an amazing experience and we are very thankful to all our parent helpers that made it possible.
Check out all the fun we had by watching the following movies:
MOVIES TO COME….WATCH THIS SPACE
A huge congratulations to Darren Skudder who placed SECOND in the MADE Awards, Manipulated Image category with his entry Digital Encyclopedia and to Bianca Colline who placed THIRD with her entry My World. This is a huge achieved as it is a national competition and this year they have over 500 entries in all! We are very proud to have received to placings! Also, a huge congratulations to Teagan, Shyanne and Tessa in Room 3 as they placed SECOND in the Story Telling category with their movie Apple Surprise! This is a very entertaining short movie that it cleverly filmed! Check it out on the main Kaimai School website to see the green screen effects they used!
Social Dance Evening
Wow! What a night!!
Room 1 did Kaimai School VERY proud with their performance of the dances they have learned over the past two terms. We had a wonderful turn out, with all the boys looking very handsome and the girls looking simply beautiful!
We got the parents up to dance too and everyone had loads of fun! Well done Room 1!

NZ AIMS & Our First Gold Medal!!
Wow! What a week for Rebekah and Darren! They competed (along with 4500 other students) in the NZ Aims Games held in Tauranga last week. It is the biggest competition for intermediate aged students in New Zealand.
The games kicked off on Sunday 28th with the Cross Country Event at Waipuna Park. This is where Rebekah ran a fantastic race and convincingly won our very first GOLD MEDAL!! We are so very proud of you Rebekah!!
Swimming was next up and Darren had two very good swims, beating a personal best and winning his heats! Then on Wednesday it was the Multisport event at McLaren Falls Park. Room 1 went down to watch the event and support Darren and Rebekah. It is a very challenging course with kayaking to start, then a difficult bike ride, finishing with a run. We were very proud to see Darren cross the line 16th! After coming off the water 10th Rebekah made up 6 places on the bike ride and came in 4th!! A brilliant effort by both and we were excited to have loads of mention of Rebekah, her gold medal and Kaimai School over the loud speaker as we waited for the competitors to cross the line.
To celebrate Rebekah’s Gold Medal – the very first for Kaimai School – Mr Robertson is shouting every student an iceblock today!!
