Camp, Calf Club & the MADE Awards!!

Posted by admin on November 18, 2011 in Cultural, EOTC

Wow! What a start to the term!! We’ve had so much happening in our class.  Week 1 was an action-packed week at Ngamuwahine Outdoor Education Centre.  Followed by calf club at the end of Week 1, then last week we had three finalists, Reeid, Bianca and Darren, in the the Media and Digital Excellence (MADE) Awards and received  second and third placings in the Manipulated Image section.

Camp was an amazing experience and we are very thankful to all our parent helpers that made it possible. :-) :-) Check out all the fun we had by watching the following movies:

MOVIES TO COME….WATCH THIS SPACE :-)

A huge congratulations to Darren Skudder who placed SECOND in the MADE Awards,  Manipulated Image category with his entry Digital Encyclopedia and to Bianca Colline who placed THIRD with her entry My World.  This is a huge achieved as it is a national competition and this year they have over 500 entries in all!  We are very proud to have received to placings!  Also, a huge congratulations to Teagan, Shyanne and Tessa in Room 3 as they placed SECOND in the Story Telling category with their movie Apple Surprise!  This is a very entertaining short movie that it cleverly filmed! Check it out on the main Kaimai School website to see the green screen effects they used!

NZ AIMS & Our First Gold Medal!!

Posted by admin on September 6, 2011 in PE & Sport

Wow! What a week for Rebekah and Darren! They competed (along with 4500 other students) in the NZ Aims Games held in Tauranga last week.  It is the biggest competition for intermediate aged students in New Zealand.

The games kicked off on Sunday 28th with the Cross Country Event at Waipuna Park.  This is where Rebekah ran a fantastic race and convincingly won our very first GOLD MEDAL!! We are so very proud of you Rebekah!!

Swimming was next up and Darren had two very good swims, beating a personal best and winning his heats!  Then on Wednesday it was the Multisport event at McLaren Falls Park.  Room 1 went down to watch the event and support Darren and Rebekah.  It is a very challenging course with kayaking to start, then a difficult bike ride, finishing with a run.  We were very proud to see Darren cross the line 16th!  After coming off the water 10th Rebekah made up 6 places on the bike ride and came in 4th!! A brilliant effort by both and we were excited to have loads of mention of Rebekah, her gold medal and Kaimai School over the loud speaker as we waited for the competitors to cross the line.

To celebrate Rebekah’s Gold Medal – the very first for Kaimai School – Mr Robertson is shouting every student an iceblock today!!

Rhinos and Lionesses this morning….

Posted by admin on August 23, 2011 in News

Wow!! Now it really feels like Africa, we’re up north again and the landscape here is much more like what I imagined Africa to be like. Long dry grass, red tinged hills and the most amazing sunsets you’ve ever laid eyes on!

On this mornings game drive we saw rhinos (both black and white!), giraffes, zebras, antelope, impala and the highlight – 5 lionesses looking for breakfast! They stalked a herd of wilder beast and i was secretly pleased that one wilder beast cottoned on and warned all the others to run off!! :-)

It was a shame we lost the game on Saturday but the atmosphere at the stadium with 50,000 South African supporters was awesome!!

We haven’t had Internet for 5 days and I haven’t been able to upload photos for you yet….maybe tonight… I hope.

Only 2 more days in Africa and then to Oz! Looking forward to coming home now! Missing you all!

Special Quiz… The first person to post a comment with the answer to this question, wins 4 triangles….
What do they call traffic lights in South Africa? (PS you are not allowed to ask Mrs Leask!!)

Visit to a Shanty Town School

Posted by admin on August 16, 2011 in News

Hi you guys!

I have really enjoyed reading your comments about what you’ve been up to. I’ve had so many amazing experiences that I’d be quite happy to come home now! Tell Mrs Taylor I got her text at 3.14 this morning about the snow!!! LOL Can’t believe you had snow and I wasn’t there to experience it!

We’re in Cape Town now and are staying right on the water front, with the magnificent Table Mountain behind us! Table Mountain is truly amazing!! What struck me about it, it that it’s one MASSIVE rock! I thought it would be a mountain like ours but it’s all rock. We went up the top today and the view was absolutely superb!!

The highlight of the day though was our visit to a Shanty Town school (I will explain more about Shanty Towns when I get home). There are 1300 students and only 28 teachers at this school. They don’t have much space, no playgrounds and only a tiny piece of grass. They sang and danced for us – I was blown away by their singing!! They didn’t sing to music like we do – they had drums and marimbas! You guys would have loved it!! I videoed it for you! At the end of their performance I spoke to them and told them all about you.

Most of these children live in houses about the size of our PE shed but NOWHERE near as flash as our PE shed. They are all very happy though and have nice uniforms and get served a hot meal for lunch so they don’t go hungry. Half of their parents don’t have jobs and there is no welfare system so they don’t get money from anywhere!!! It really has made me think about how lucky we all are!! I have now seen how true those Miniature Earth facts are! In these Shanty Towns there are around 1.2 million people!!

Tomorrow I will try to upload some photos for you.

Hope you are all being good!

Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana..

Posted by admin on August 11, 2011 in General

Hey you guys!

Thanks for your messages girls! Boys are you out there???  Glad to hear you’re having fun!

We are in Zambia now…it’s hard to get internet and there’s no cellphone coverage.  We staying right beside the Victoria Falls (one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World!!) They are absolutely, unbelievably, amazing!!  I’ve never seen anything like it before.  Google them so you can see what I’m talking about!!  We also went up in a helicopter to see them as they’re SO big you can’t see the whole thing from one spot!!  You won’t believe it but yesterday afternoon there were five zebras right outside our room!! I was so excited.  We saw hippos on our Zambezi river cruise, elephants from the helicopter, a monkey with it’s baby when we walked to Zimbabwe and a giraffe on the hotels driveway last night!!! It is just the best seeing them in their natural habitat!! :-)

Today we go to Botswana…it’s really weird driving (or walking) to other countries! It’s hot here and I got sunburnt yesterday, but we are enjoying the warm weather!

I better go now and let others use the internet!  (Remember, that the comments you leave everyone can see…)  Missing you all!!
